Process Statement
To conduct research for the "Night Journey" project, I slept as a subject on many occasions in a sleep laboratory to be awakened from REM sleep. The audio recordings collected during awakenings are used as inspiration to create the images which are constructed in my Dallas studio by photographing shadows of models and props using a 4x5 Sinar view camera with a Leaf digital back. The images are 35"x47" printed on Hahnemuhle 308 Rag. The shadow narratives depicted in the images signify the elusive and impermanent quality of dreaming and is a universal inquiry into an unexplainable experience all humans share.
Susan kae Grant’s photographic and book-works are included in numerous collections including, The George Eastman House, The J. Paul Getty Museum, The Minneapolis Art Institute, The Tokyo Museum of Photography, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and The Victoria and Albert Museum National Library.
